Standing for election?

Published On:Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Candidates for election process personal data and must comply with the requirements of the data protection legislation.

In addition, as canvassing for election falls within the definition of "direct marketing", candidates for election must comply with the Unsolicited Communications Regulations 2005 if they are considering canvassing the electorate by telephone or by email.

Door-to-door canvassing is not, however, affected by the data protection legislation or the Unsolicited Communications Regulations.

Candidates for election are required to register with the Commissioner as a controller, but no fee is payable. To register - click here
